STUDENT INVOLVEMENT & EXPECTATIONS

The LFME is designed to be active and participatory. Students are encouraged to go beyond observation and engage directly in supervised patient care activities such as:

  • Conducting initial histories
  • Taking vital signs
  • Practicing elements of the physical exam
  • Assisting with minor procedures (e.g., immunizations)
  • Observing and learning electronic medical record (EMR) documentation
Skill level varies among learners; supervisors are encouraged to gradually increase student responsibility based on competence and comfort. All patient encounters are supervised, and every patient must be seen by the supervising physician or resident before leaving the clinic.

EVALUATION REQUIREMENTS

Program Evaluation

Students are encouraged to complete the LFME Program Evaluation sent by email at the beginning of the placement cycle. Feedback is used to refine the program.

Targeted Treatments

Supervisors will complete a brief evaluation form at the end of the rotation, which is provided directly to the student to support their professional growth.

Resident Evaluation

If residents participate in supervising learners, supervisors are encouraged to provide brief feedback to assist with their development as educators.
